Background

Thank you for this lecture. It's a good place to start.

I wanted to understand how the bluish background was added in the final render as seen in the lesson text. Was it done in blender or some other software. Also, is it possible to create a solid background with shadows on it without any ground/floor? I have seen such bg in many animation shorts.

Thank you!

First part of your question is the blue background can be done by going to the world tab of the properties editor and adjusting the color. The second part of your question is I'm 98% sure you have to have an object to receive the shadow. there is a thing called an infinity screen. basically add a plane mesh object. Tab into edit mode. select the back edge(Opposite side from the camera) and press e to extrude it. Then press Z to constrain on z axis and move up to height you want and left click to confirm. Then select the edge you extruded(The one edge that is connected to both faces). Press Ctrl+B to bevel it. Use mouse wheel to add segments until it like kinda of smooth on the rounding. I usually use 4 or 6 segments. Left click to confirm. Tab back to object mode. Right click and click shade smooth.
