Vertex group containing more vertex than selected

Following the tutorial, the instructor inserts the black faces and creates a vertex group just for the vertices inside the inset. I'm trying to do same thing (not did exactly same teacher steps) and it seems more vertex than selected are added to the group (The vertices inside the inset and the ones in the frame).

If I deselect everything after doing the inset and re-select the vertices and create the group, the group is created with the correct vertices. Is this as intended or a bug?

It does look buggy yes, it can also be that you have double vertices? Try selecting everything with A and then M to merge by distance, see if any vertices are merged.

    Hi hhexdump ,

That is weird! I can't see you doing anything wrong, but this is definitely not what it's supposed to do...Also, I can't reproduce it....

Could it be  a 3rd party Addon that you are using? (Probably not...)

What if you try again from scratch (in a new .blend file)?

I created a new file and everything worked as expected 0_0.

Omar: I can't test the merge because I went to sleep and closed the file and now I can't return to the state where the insets did not exist :(.

It seems that something weird happened. Thanks for the help guys!
