Bump map not showing in the rendered view

I've wasted too much time trying to understand why I don't see my bump map on the render view when connected to the Normal input on the BSDF shader. It turns out I connected it to the wrong input: there's a Normal input on the Coat section of the BSDF shader that I mistakenly used, instead of the correct Normal input.

    THIS HAPPENS TO ME ALL THE TIME. In fact the Bump node will default incoming noodles to the Normal socket (4.2):
