Difference between Make Cyclic and Cycles modifier?

posted to: Looping Ball

I tried both:

Channel -> Extrapolation Mode -> Make Cyclic (F-Modifier)

and

adding a Cycles modifier through the N-menu.

I got the same results for both, is there a reason to use one over the other?

Wayne will say better, but I think the modifier was first and then they introduced the extrapolation mode later in Blender version. I think the extrapolation mode is just a quick way to get the effect but the modifier allows for more control and settings. But Wayne will have a better answer tomorrow so we get our answer yesterday today.

    Hi Arek aarekn ,

It's the same. Make Cyclic is just another way to Add a Cycles Modifier.

(Unless I am mistaken, of course...then Wayne will correct me.)

One thing I also don't understand is why does making an animation cyclic turn the motion path into a perfect circle? What if I want it to be this odd egg-shape except loopy?

    Hi Arek,
Spikey is correct in saying that they are both the same.

One way is just a lot faster than the other.

As for your looping animation with the 'egg-shaped' motion.  You will need to change the handle types away from one of the automatic types before you add the cyclic modifier.

Those automatic handles will adjust to make the motion smooth, even across a cyclic loop, whereas something like 'aligned' will not move when it loops.

    Hope that makes sense.
