Fake User

posted to: Model a Lamp Post

Long story short, I mis-labeled the material names.  I clicked New Material x2 for the 2 different materials and renamed them correctly:  cubicity_painted and cubicly_glass-emit.  I unlinked the data blocks for the misnamed and applied the Fake User on the new.  I did this because Blender was showing me 0 at the beginning of each, I didn't want them to get zapped.  Is this going to cause problems down the road with the lessons and asset browser?

I don't think so no. But either way there is nothing that can't be corrected and it wont be a headache, but I doubt it comes to that thought, so continue on with happy feelings.

Thank you Omar.  Felt silly asking but that never stops me.  hahaha.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean...
You assigned the materials to the wrong mesh?
or they are the correct material and mesh and you named them wrong?

If it's the material to wrong mesh, you can just reassign them correctly or you can just rename them if that is the case.

That's if I got the gist of the problem.

Adrian, the problem was your second guess.  I was only at the stage of naming materials only, they were never assigned.  I just found I had mis-labeled 2 material names, they should have been lower case.  My solution was to add 2 new materials with the correct name and used "X" to disconnect the data block from the previous materials.  The new materials with the correct names where then made Fake User because I was spooked by the 0 in front of their file names.

I suppose the quickest way to ask this is, "Will fake user cause any troubles to anything being shared or added to asset browser?"  :)

    Then, no.
Fake user just insures the data (material) doesn't get deleted when you close Blender.
If it is not assigned to anything it is just stored in memory and won't be saved.
So you chose the right option. Although you will likely assign the materials to a mesh later.
