REALLY dumb cloth sim question

Question Animation

Hi, I have some weirdness going on - my cloth won't move in the cloth sim.
Using my super powered PC and Blender 4.1, I did the most basic cloth sim (cube, plane (subdivided), add cloth sim, add collider, press play). Nothing moved.
I opened up Blender 3.6 and the same happened.
I tried exactly the same thing (actually I didn't even use a collider) on my 8GB ram laptop without a dedicated graphics card and it works fine!
I must be missing something REALLY obvious but I can't think what?

Thanks!

Can you give more detail? Walk us through all the setup and options you're doing, some screenshots, etc. To see if there's a mistake somewhere along the line.

  • James Treweek(Smartassmusic) replied

Sure (I'm thinking it may be an addon- I have too many!)
I did the most simple thing:
    Add cube
Add plane - scale up (in edit mode) subdivide (x20)
In object mode add cloth sim to plane and collider to the cube.
On my underpowered laptop that works fine.
On my superpowered PC - nothing moves(!)
Here's the uber basic file - I didn't mess with any setting in the physics because it worked on the laptop (and on every tutorial I've watched)
Also, I've used it in the past.
    Really  odd.

Yeah, we definitely need more information James.

Doesn't sound like a Blender Version or PC vs Laptop thing (you already say: "I tried exactly the same thing (actually I didn't even use a collider)", so not exactly the same thing...)

Hey James, you have turned off Gravity:

Brilliant! Except...at the same time, that's REALLY f**** annoying.
That's a completely fresh scene so I didn't turn anything off. That's "out of the box" but whatever version I have on the laptop, it's switched on by default.
    GRRRRRRR
    Thank you!!!!!

Hm, it really should be turned on by default...maybe you turned it off at one time and then the next Blender Version you installed adapted the old Settings.

Ah, interesting. I thought it was just Blender trying to mess with my head :-)
