I can't get this to work properly

posted to: Explore the Toolbox

I'm using Blender 3.6 and I try to do as you say to make the cloud but when I assign the fill it doesn't look like your example, perhaps it is a bug.

  • It's not a bug😉

Hello. Can you post screenshots or maybe even a screen recording  and walk us through the problem with more detail so we can see what's wrong and help out.

    Solution

    Hey thimblefoliopress,

You probably have some stray vertices that are causing the issue

    Solid_Fill_Error.png

See where the lines overlap, then when you join with CTRL+J, Blender will connect those vertices and it kind of twists the line back on itself and Blender has trouble calculating the solid fill.

Delete any vertices so there is no overlap, here I can just delete 1 vertices,
I will probably remove the one on the left, and leave the 2 vertices that will join the ones that are closer together,
and select everything again, then press CTRL+J to join them.

Also, I don't think there is a major difference with Grease Pencil, but it's not wise to use any other version than the one used in the course.
Newer versions can be used with some prior knowledge, but Blender is not backward compatible.

Meaning, there could be a new feature in v4.x that was not in v3.x and therefore not replicable.

A change in the first number of the version means a major update, as stated, v3 and v4 have major differences.
The second number change indicates minor updates.
and the third number is basically for bug fixes.

Using v3.4 for a v3.6 course shouldn't cause to many headaches, but using v3.x for a v4.x is likely to give you nightmares, although as I said I don't believe there are major changes with Grease Pencil, but I could be wrong.

Can I ask why you have decided to use v3.6 for this course?

hi thimblefoliopress - wow you're powering through already! I suggest you jump on the trouble-shooting/clean-up lesson which addresses some of these inconsistencies. Specifically around 3 minutes in https://cgcookie.com/lessons/lesson-04-cleaning-up#

Hi Adrian, thanks for helping me understand what is going on, that is exactly what was happening to the cloud I tried to make in your screenshot. I'll see if I can do it again with your advice. I guess I should use Blender 4 as well, I'm a bit scared to update my Blender version because the last time I tried version 4 it crashed a lot on my computer but hopefully those bugs or reasons for that have been fixed by now. Mabye I will see if I can get it to work in my current version and if not I'll upgrade it.

Hi Paul, thanks for replying, I will have a look at the lesson about cleaning up as you advice, thanks! Thanks for making this course by the way, I have wanted to learn Grease pencil for ages.

You're welcome! While this issue is one that has been around for a little while, do keep an eye out this year for the LTS version of Blender - 4.2LTS - As it is rumored to ship with Grease Pencil 3.0. This will offer some big under-the-hood improvements to the whole user experience. Everything in the course will still be relevant of course, and they're not overhauling things which will change how you do things - however I've heard of some improvements such as groups for layers will be included - this is AWESOME. If you're going to eventually try a later release, the LTS releases are usually the most stable.
