This is so confusing! (Displacement inquiry)

Question Materials and Textures

Ok, guys, I've been working for a while on creating a lava texture, but I've hit a wall. I don't know what's wrong with my process.

This is the texture that should create a good displacement:

I've tried using it with only a multiply node, in case there was a problem with the grays, and yet nothing has worked:

Before you start with some suggestions, I'll list what I've checked already:

Yes, displacement and bump mapping are enabled:

- I'm working in Cycles. Switching from experimental to supported didn't make a difference.

- I am on rendered mode.

I alsotried connecting the bump to displacement; that didn't work. Then I tried multiply to displacement, and that didn't work either!

I am lost and desperate for help. Wish you guys can help! Does spikeyxxx or @Dostovel have any idea? Anyone?

    HI Juan Infoxicao ,

At a first glance, don't plug the Value into the Normal of the Displcement Node, but in the Height (Same for the Bump Node, if you'd use that) and you actually need to plug the Displacement into the Displacement of the Material Output:

You don't really need the Multiply Node, you can use the Scale of the Displacement Node for that.

Hey? Okay sorry that was a test... Mavenseed seems to have block me when including a pic in the answers. Damn. Is there any way to contact you outside this platform?

Why isn't mavenseed letting me post a pic?

Okey now it worked, so this happened when I followed your steps (look at how small is the scale):

    Yeah, that's because your Map Range Node turns a [0.6, 0.5] range into a [0, 1] range....that's like multiplying by -10)

This is the result of the map range:

    This one is the multiply

Connecting it directly from the invert color node does this:

And the inverted color looks like this:

You are getting real displacement already, now it's a matter of dialing it to what you need, see what works for you. The values will also depend on the scale, so be sure the scale is applied. Also if you're not on the CG Cookie Discord, you can join up, it's up there in the menu to the left with the tree lines and magnifying glass.

Infoxicao to prevent these types of posting errors, make sure you are using cgcookie.com, and not cgcookie.mavenseed.com
