Reasons for changing individual step rates

posted to: Rendering Volumes
At 1:52, Jonathan explains HOW to change individual step rates for different objects. In terms of WHY and WHEN this would be useful, and to quickly make good sense of it; would an example be if there is a volume object way in the distance, and one much closer, EG clouds, or smoke rising from a different fires. Would it be a good idea to increase the step rate for the specific volume in the distance to speed up the render if it's far enough away where it's not necessarily needed to see it clearly? If I'm on the right track with it (or if I'm not) what other examples are there when this would be useful?

You are right on target. I'm sure there are some VFX uses for it, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

Yep, you're right, that's exactly what it's used for!

You hit the bull right on the nose cowboy, you tamed that horse swiftly, you herded the sheep's elegantly, so yeah you got it.
