Suggestion for knowledge development vs fun?

Hi there,

I'm really trying to focus on learning the fundamentals in the proper way, and absolutely love how in depth the fundamentals courses are here!

I am, however, finding harder to retain all this knowledge when blasting through these. And I sure am trying to move as fast as I can so I can get started with my own little project.

Here's the question: Is there a course that I can follow without too much trouble and still get a really cool end result when I haven't yet gone through the fundamentals of texturing, rigging, rendering, and animating? Lol.

I know it sounds like a lot, but after the first 4 fundamentals and modeling bootcamp I feel like I need a little quick "victory project". Not sure that makes sense at all.

I'm particularly curious to follow along the Sessions course, and more so the Macro one. Will I regret jumping into those at this point?

Thanks for any insight!

    Hi Nathalia,

Press Start should be perfectly doable for you and I think you should be able to handle all the Sessions as well at this point..in fact I think they (Sessions) might be perfect, because they are relatively short projects....quick victories, as you call them 😉

Sessions courses can be done after Blender basics. Kent is pretty good at explaining things in these. You may have to rewatch some parts and pay attention to the screencast keys, but otherwise I think they are doable for a beginner. The one thing that I've seen that really helps people learn faster is the learn one do one rule. Watch 1 tutorial. then do 1 simple project similar to what you did. I wished I had followed this when I started.

nathitappan however you decide to learn, my advice would to avoid "blasting" your way through lessons/courses.
This could be the reason you are finding it hard to retain the knowledge.

Learning Blender takes more than watching a course to absorb knowledge, practice is also vital.
And with so much to learn, repetition is also beneficial. Repeat a lesson/course until you are comfortably with what is being taught.

Don't just copy what you see, try practicing what you see in a lesson/course on your own. The fundamentals courses will teach you so much more than copying a tutorial on how to model a donut for example, but to make the most of them, have a go at the exercises and play around with values and settings, just to get a feel of what they do.

I agree with Adrian, you will never retain all that information, even Kent or JL have to refer to their own tutorials from time to time to get a refresher on how to do the things because you just forget, Blender is too big. So it's all about practice and repetition, doing things on your own and checking back at stuff you forgot how to do from time to time. Start doing your own projects and don't be afraid to re-watch some of the fundamentals once you feel you're up to speed, you'll be amazed how much the knowledge will solidify in your mind when you watch the fundamentals a second time.

I can see that! I suddenly don't feel as bad for having to rewatch some of the lessons event to complete the final exercise. Thank you for your input guys!
