Grave Accent / Tilde

posted to: Basic 3D Navigation
To get a tilde ( ~ ), you have to press the SHIFT key. And that doesn't work. I checked the key mapping for ' ~ ' and it's not mapped. However, the grave accent (same key, unshifted) does work. Have you remapped your keys to use the tilde or are you just calling it tilde because it's a more recognized symbol?

    Hi Paul ppaulhaynes1955 ,

What symbol it is, depends on your keyboard layout. This is also 'mentioned' in the Preferences:

(If I'm not mistaken, it should always be the key on the top left, just below the Escape, no matter what the symbol on that key is, but I haven't tested all possible keyboards.))

Is there a keyboard that has an unshifted tilde in that position?

    Yes, let me find one...

    Hm,

I can't find one...maybe I'm mistaken...I was pretty sure I'd seen it, but my memory must be playing tricks on me....

That does indeed make it weird that Blender calls it the Tilde key...because it's not meant to be used with SHIFT...

Sounds like you could have the Keyboard layout on your operating system to Spanish or any other language other than English?

All the keys get moved around depending on the language you set on the operating system.

It stems from gaming community. They started referring to it as the tilde key because the accent grave, accent de major, back tick, opening single quote, and about 13 other names for the unshifted tilde made it difficult to communicate to others. So, yes, technically speaking the tilde key(using shift) puts you into walk mode by default, and the accent grave gives you the pie menu(view pie by default). Side note: it is always to the left of number 1 on top row on a standard qwerty keyboard.

FYI: Jonathan does mention this in the lesson at ~06:02

In case anyone's annoyed by the "tilde doesn't show on first hit, then two ~~ show up" issue - it's called dead keys. To disable it you need to create a custom keyboard layout using MSKLC from Microsoft.

    Keywords: tilde, dead, MSKLC
