7:13 - why not just scale down the size of the leaf so it doesn't clip?

Question Materials and Textures

Answering my own question - presumably that will make the leaf too small but that leads me to the bigger question - I don't really understand how you assess if the texture/distribution is correct when it's only mapped to a small sphere?

If I apply the current material to the background cyc (more like a ground plane/landscape) if looks terrible

Correct - all the leaves would be too small.

Applying to a larger object, you need to make sure the scale is applied, and you may need to make adjustments until you get something you like.

The examples here are exactly that, examples. Every situation will require tweaking in some way.

As Adrian says, it's just an example for teaching, materials and textures will depend on each situation and if you're reusing a material, you'll need to adjust depending on each situation. And then there's texture resolution that needs to be taken into account, your texture can get pixelated depending on how far or close you are, so there's a couple of things to be aware of.

ah ok... so the normal workflow would be to create the texture on the object you actually want to texture.... I know the last chapter is titled workflow but I've not got there yet
