offset on Follow Path Constrain

posted to: Animate on Path: 2

Hi Wayne, I'm stuck on the course again. The constraint on the MAIN bone does not make it stick on the path because of the offset from the origin. What did I do wrong?

hmm - it's a little hard to tell what the issue is without seeing something.
Could you post some images or a screen capture.
Or even better - your file.

That way one of us can take a look - or as we sometimes say in my part of the world - "I'll take a squizz at it"

You can't post the file here directly, but a link to google drive or dropbox etc will work perfectly.

    Hi Massimiliano,
Thanks for sending your file, I've taken a look and I don't exactly know why your Main bone has the offset.
However, you can try setting the Z location value to -0.375 and it should work as expected.

Let me know how that goes.

    Or move the Path down...

Okay, in one of these 2 ways I had solved it too, and that is by "putting a patch" (as they say in Italian), but on the course there is no mention of it. I thought I had done something wrong, and it should come back automatically.

The issue is that in the course you took the distance of the Main bone from the plane (0.27 m) is then set the low vertices of the path curve to that value on the Z axis. Why, if you then just left the curve as modified by the Shrinkwrap modifier you used?

    Hi Massimiliano,

To be honest I can't remember the exact steps I took in that course (I would have to rewatch it to see).  But I do know that I would have done it in a specific way in order to have an expected outcome.  There's a very good chance I did it the way you noted because it avoided adding the offset.
For example, when you parent to a bone but manually setting the value in the relations tab, it adds the offset.  Whereas if you parent in the viewport with Ctrl P, it doesn't.  Perhaps it was for a similar reason I did it that specific way.  Or perhaps the way I did things was silly.  That is a possibility as well.

I'm sorry if it caused you some confusion, but it sounds like having this struggle ended up giving you a better understanding in the long run.
