Hi All, I'm completely new to Blender (and 3D modeling in general). I did the donut tutorials on youtube and then started the Fundamentals of 3D Mesh Modeling in Blender. Great course. Exactly what I was looking for. Explaining all the details and concepts slowly and clearly. Finished all the videos and started working on the final exercise, to create the room. Except that I decided not to create a bedroom but a kitchen. Still have not finished but got carried away when doing some of the details and decided to model a Nespresso machine. Much harder that I expected to model all the details and curves. If I had to do it again, I would make it different, using the mirror modifier and not creating too many bevels... Had to redo a bunch of things to get the topology in a way I could actually work. But the end result was not too bad, so I wanted to post as a first step on the courses. Any opinion is appreciated. The materials are pretty basic, but I have not done the shading and texturing courses.
Thanks for the encouragement Omar! I will keep doing all the courses and learning more!
Hi Everyone, Got a bit carried away in the hologram lesson (Introduction to Texturing course). Created a quick room in a space ship to have the hologram... There are a few things that can improve, and I still don't really understand how to create volumetric light, but result is something I would like to share. And would like to hear the opinion of the team on how and what to improve.
For the hologram itself, used the one on the course as a basis, but added vertical lines as well and mixed with a earth texture. For the LCD control below the hologram I mixed the texture with some scanlines to make it look more retro... And the starts are a procedural texture as the environment texture, following the ideas of the course.
It's looking great. I think the first thing I noticed was the walls are very empty as well as the overall room. Maybe you can add assets and widgets and other sci-fi details to make the room feel more like a control room. Those small details go a long way to sell a story.
Thanks for the great feedback Omar and Martin. I completely agree with both points. Increasing the technical skills in Blender is one thing, connecting this to the artistic side is something else :). Finally something that starts as a simple idea can grow a lot. And in the end finalizing the render is an exercise of endless tweaking. But I think that's part of the fun. I will continue to work on this scene. Lets see how it goes :)
After the feedback I got and completing the texturing course I did a new version of the space station scene. Its interesting to see the progress after 4 months doing the courses here on CG Cookie and going from a complete beginner to doing a first scene with multiple objects, texture (procedural, hand drawn and PBR textures). Its not perfect but I think its something interesting. Just need to finish texturing the bike and then forward to the fundamentals of light course. This is something I want to publish as a first project on my account here. The planet on the background is also made in Blender. And as always any feedback is welcome.
Thank you all for the feedback! And I have a lot to thank the course here on CG Cookies for getting there.
