When I switch to texture paint mode, my object turns pink and I get a 'missing data' error and a 'missing texture slot' error at the top left. What step am I missing?

That's normal behavior. Did you watch this lesson? https://cgcookie.com/lesson/creating-an-image-texture/

ddem1 What did you do to solve it? I still have a pink object. I rewatched that lesson several times, I have a texture but it's asking for a material and paint slot. It's colored when I have the 3D viewport in edit mode and pink in texture paint mode.

After messing around with it, I discovered that my problem was the painting mode located in the toolbar of the 3D viewport under the "slots" tab. I switched my Painting mode from the default of "material" to the "image" Painting mode using the dropdown box, and selected my "Texture" texture from the Canvas Image dropdown box. It worked fine for me after that!

Thank you so much leadfaith for that solution! I had gone back through the lessons and I still couldn't make it work. Now i am good to go. :)
