How are you entering edit mode then retopo mode?
When I do same steps for the educational version of the tool blender freezes and crashes without fail.
I can enter it fine out of edit mode or in retopo object's edit mode, which does nothing pretty much.
If i add mesh data to this object it refuses to enter back into retopo mode.
