Blender 3.6.1 Edge loops not working like in video, Explain?

posted to: Modeling the Sides
I ran into an issue where I tried to make an edge loop like at video marker 1:50 but all I saw was vertices no edges. I was still able to make the shape, but it bothers me that the edge lines do not show, could someone tell me why?

    Hi coldforge_010 ,

    Well that should bother you!

You have made a (possibly essential) mistake somewhere; maybe you have hidden part of your Mesh (ALT+H to get the hidden parts back), or part of the Mesh is actually missing, or you have 'double Vertices' (M > Merge > By Distance), or...?

The best thing to do, is to start from scratch.

Maybe you have your Mouse over an Edge, instead of over the Face:

I just did what you said, deleted the plane and started over, it worked, maybe I was just tired 😴

But, to ask this question I reproduce the problem again, first I beveled the vertices, then the loop cuts and I could not make the loop cuts properly, the vertices would show but not the edges when making the cut.

    Ah, I see!

If you Bevel the Vertices, you create a so-called N-Gon. And Edge Loops only go through Quads (a Face with 4 Vertices).

You can always watch the mesh modeling bootcamp, it's there where you'll learn all the rules of modeling:
