Displacement from decals

Question Modeling

I am doing some race car modelling and was wondering if it was possible in blender to change the surface geometry or colour map from a mapped to uv texture. I can render it no problem but would like to embed the logos etc into the mesh so I can split the model along colours / sculpt lines for painting or even 3d print multicolour. I watched the sand dunes course and it sort of works but of course is very perspective bound and also not very crisp (at least not for me).

Thanks very much for any help you can give.

I don't understand your question that much. Can you clear that up a bit, elaborate.

If I understand correctly, you want to add logos to the material and you want different UV's? but at the same time preserve the UV's you already have?

    Hi

Sure. I really just want to use a jpg to create crisp love lines in a mesh so that I can print the mesh with the jpg in relief. Make sense?

Dangs no, not so much. Can you add pictures and explain it to me like I'm five?

You want to use a JPG, ok, to create love lines? And print the model with JPG in relief? Totally lost.

    Solution

You'll need a lot of geometry (see sand dunes course) in order to get the displacement...and even then, a JPG will probably not be good enough for 'crisp' lines...

Also, you'll need to use a Displacement Node:

    Displacement.png

...and be aware, that also the resolution of your image (and even the bit depth ) decides how pixelated the Displacement will be.

The best result will probably be with a high resolution 32 bit EXR on a high resolution Mesh.

Thanks very much for all the help and my apologies for the stupid typos.  I am headed in the right direction now with a subdivided mesh, exr and a displacement modifier.

    Thanks again

Ooooh that was what he wanted to do, I think I get it now. Displace the geometry with an image. Cool.

:). Yeah don't rub it in.  I always ask myself why write something correct and simple when I can make autocorrect mistakes and not be clear. Thanks though Omar. I must do better
