The tile texture for the background is missing, so in the rendered view it appears purplish/pink, just as Kent said would happen to an object if it had an image texture node without a texture applied. Sure enough in the node editor there's an image texture node feeding into a mix -> diffuse -> material output. I tried adding the checkered texture but it seems to be missing from the list.

    The checkered texture is a "generated type" in Blender. What I did was create a new texture and chose "uv grid" as my choice under "generated type" and then applied that to the background.
