Weekend Husky Practice

Polybooks

I got my assignment back for my Husky and it passed but the mesh was a little to dense so I decided to do it again and try to get the mesh density down.

It's a little better but I need to keep practicing. I had to figure out how to model the whole dog so there may be better techniques I've yet to discover.

Meshy is the subd version and Quadly is the low poly version...8^]

    Hey Brad,

    That is looking really good!

And kudos for re=doing the excercise 💯

You have 1 heavily distorted Quad (its neighbour is also slightly bent) here:

    Husky_2.png

but the Subsurf Modifier 'fixes' that. 💯

    Some minor points:

Two triangles that can easily be fixed if you want, are those N-Gons at the corner of the mouth? and a 6-sided Pole:

But all these points don't cause any problems in the Subdiv Model, so good enough!

Again, I must say: great work 👍🏻

    Hey Martin,

Thanks so much for looking at this. Wow, again you got sharp eyes. I was meticulous at the beginning on making the facial loops and I must have fouled it up along the way and didn't notice. I corrected it to get the loop back just as you showed.

The first pic with the quad that looks distorted is the end of the dog's mane and it's twisted due to compensating for when the subd is turned on. It's not pretty but was made that way on purpose to make a sort of smooth transition where it tapers off back into the fur. I'm short of having techniques in my tool belt and using a hammer for most things. 8^]

I really didn't know how to close up the openings in the ears and a few other areas. I just had to sort of wing it best I could. Not completely happy with some things.

Does CG Cookie have more in the way of this kind of modeling or do you recommend other course/tutorials on this kind of modeling?

  • Martin Bergwerf replied

    Hi Brad,

    sorry for the delayed answer.

Yes, that distorted Quad is fine as long as you are aware of it and the (subdivided) result looks good (which it does in your case).

Poly modeling organic shapes like this is not done a lot anymore (usually it is done by Sculpting and then Retopologizing, but there are some older CGCookie Classics, for instance this series Female Character Modeling (12 parts (unfinished but full of rtimeless topology trcks)) starting with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8qbY70F8po

and Edge Modeling a Human Head (3 parts), starting : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHYKLFBNeaM

I will add a kudos for tackling the exercise again Brad. I have been there where you're like, I know I can do this better and you try it again. Not an easy thing to convince your brain to do, even though it has great benefits. Silly brain, always falling for things that are not helpful to it, luckily we have the mind to try and steer the brain.

Thanks Omar. I think it helps to have lost my mind years ago, the silly bugger. lol 8^]

+1 to Martin and Omar's comments. This version looks much less boxy and nicely improved! I love that you took the time to give this another go 👏👏

Thanks Johnathan. I may be doing it several times yet. I haven't quiet got the hang of forming everything but I do like the modeling technique, and need a lot of practice and tutorial/courses. Is this called Edge Modeming?
