7000 Triangles

posted to: Model a Husky Puppy

Hi,

Been working on Pole, my Husky off and on, should hopefully be done hopefully no later the Tuesday but aiming for Monday, unless….

I never had to look out for the triangle count before and during modelling I see the Tri count jumped to 7880 in Object mode but was at 1240 in Edit mode.

With all the modifiers turned on it’s 44,400. When I turn them off it goes down to 6660 (7880 is with just the Mirror mod on)

What is the 7000 limit requirement related to? Edit or Object mode?

    Hi Brad,

That is the number in Edit Mode. When you are in Object Mode Blender counts the total amount of Verices and co, meaning from all the Objects in your Scene.

Although, come to think of it, it could also (and more likely in this case) be, because you are using a Subsurf Modifier; in Edit Mode, it counts the undivided Mesh and in Object Mode the subdivided.

So, I looked at the Model Jonathan has and it has something more than 6000 triangles in Object Mode.

That's what I thought and read online but the Husky is the only object. Not trying to be argumentative or anything just trying to understand what happened.

A standard new project file comes in at 972 tris and the tris were at a relatively cozy amount in Object mode and it just  shot up exponentially somewhere. I even deleted everything else except the Husky and no real change in numbers, very minor amount .

Oh well, as long as I can submit the work., this isn't worth pursuing One day this will all am sense to me, hopefully. lol

Thanks again Martin! I appreciate your and everyone else's help here.

The subsurf does when turn of comes down but still a high count is in Object mode as I stated in the first post

But don't waste any time on this. The mystery will reveal itself and it will be old man Jenkins like in Scobey Doo.

These are Jonathan's stats for the Husky (Object Mode):

Well, I looked at myhusky and it had 4.4k Triangles unsubdivided, which resulted in 42.1k Triangles with the Subsurf Modifier.

And I don't think I could reduce the polycount so much that the Subdivided Mesh would get to 7k (one sixth of the amount):

The 7,000 limit, as he says in the video, is to not make the model unnecessarily complicated. Meaning that making your model too dense is always a bad thing, you never want the base mesh in edit mode to be hard to control and when you have too many polygons, making a change becomes incredibly difficult. So the limit is a way of encouraging you to work efficiently.

If anyone else is wondering why their tri count is so low, don't forget the mirror modifier will halve it! (Confused me for a while haha)
