Building a map of an area of land

Question

I am trying to work out how to do a map of an area of land.

It is about 2 km by 2 km, with a river, woods, building roads etc.

Start at the gate and then fly around the area and go into the building.

There must be a better way of doing it than taking the big area cutting it into 1m squares, and turning off everything which can not see.

Big scenes is always a big subject and there are many ways to tackle it. This is the stuff that studios in productions struggle with. I don't think turning things on and off is the way to go. If it's a single fly by with no cuts, yikes, that's tough. What comes to my mind is first, linking assets is a must to save on memory and second rendering in layers and putting it together in compositing. There are lots of challenges here, because stitching things together is a difficult task. Also building things saving the most polygons you can, things that will remain far off in the horizon can be very low poly. When we made the Spice Vendor House, it was all there in a big scene. You can watch the livestreams, maybe it'll give you an idea.
