I tried the 1 x 1 x 1 scale and it made it huge when I applied it, while yours stayed the same (basic) size. Also, I can't get the bevel to work like yours. Can you elaborate?

Look at the size of your Bevel (called 'Amount' in the Bevel Modifier) and see how that is compared to the size of your model.
And: "can't get the Bevel to work like yours" is a bit too vague.
