Something worth noting regarding multires...

When I initially started creating my face zones I had the viewport setting for multires set to a value of 2.  This resulted in blocky facial zones because I wasn't giving myself enough vertices to work with.  So going into the Modifier Properties tab and dialing up my viewport multires value to at least 4 produced a much nicer color gradient. Just be prepared for some lag if you're running an older graphics card.

True, that's how it goes. One day maybe Blender will get to ZBrush level of handling polygons or maybe Unreal Engine 5 level of polygons, which is insane.
