Broken course or broken Blender? Or both?

posted to: Skin Modifier Base

Extruding or even trying to manually move vertices can only be done on the Y and Z axis'. If this is a well-known issue why is this course being recommended before doing the Create Realistic Characters course?

Actually, where are ANY updated courses for v3.X? The biggest problem I have is v2.8 and v2.9 are outdated, and many features have changed or been removed, effectively breaking courses, like the Cloud Creation in EEVEE.

I paid for a month of membership, but it's unlikely I'll pay for a 2nd or get an annual subscription at this rate...

Hello Kay. Sorry for the inconvenience. It's not easy to keep up with Blender fast developing cycles. Old courses have timeless knowledge in them, but it's harder if your are following step by step what you see on screen. What I do is, if I want to follow step by step, I download the Blender version that it's being used on the video. If I don't want to deal with an old Blender, then I watch the courses to soak up all the knowledge in them, because everything they do on an old course you can do in today's Blender, only difference is the buttons are in different places.

There are courses more up to date that you can watch first if you're having trouble following old courses. Then after you feel comfortable in Blender no matter the version, you can come back to the old courses. No matter their age, they are still available to be watched because in Blender you get to a point where you don't mind the UI, you care more about concepts and ideas.

So hang in there, we all get frustrated at the beginning, but it gets easier the more you grind. Remember, you can start with more up to date courses first.

    Hi Kay KRMeadows ,

Nothing is broken;. It is not an issue, but a feature; when you are in Orthographic View, let say Front Orthographic, then you cannot accidentally move Vertices on the Y-Axis (that you wouldn't notice until you leave Front View) and mess up your model! This is actually a life-saver and you'll be soooo happy that this is made this way 😉

For the rest of your question, Omar has already answered that better than I could.

I've been learning Blender for a year, I'm not just starting out.

I posted this question more for the benefit of other people who are starting to learn with more current versions (v3.X) and don't want to rollback to v2.67.3 but would appreciate better categorized and grouped courses according to version functionality, or additional videos that address changes.

Such an easy solution should be mentioned in the course or video description.

Not being able to use the grid for size reference because X extrusions have to be done in perspective doesn't seem like something I will EVER be thankful for. Ctrl-Z solves mistakes and learning from mistakes is the better path to truly learning.

    Anyone can follow instructions.

    Only some actually learn.

I'm watching everything for information and understanding, but more practical information and understanding would stop interrupting lessons more than they currently do.

I thank you both for the help, much appreciated.

What do you mean? Sounds wrong. That would indeed be a pain, but you can extrude in X, when in Front Ortho and in Y, when in Right Ortho (for instance)....no need to be in Pesrpective View. I probably misunderstand you; when is this mentioned in the video (time), please?

  • Kay Meadows(KRMeadows) replied

Yeah, it is wrong, but if you go into perspective mode there is no problem extruding along X. It seems that it happens to the vertices that are in line with the Global X=0, but as soon as you extrude on X it can be switched back to Orthographic and the extrusion goes back to working as, I think, it should.

I didn't play around to find the limitations (eg. do other vertices on global X=0 have the same issue? or, if I extrude and right click can I grab and move along X or is it still locked to Y and Z only?) but I'll keep testing it once I get through all the courses I'm doing.

This wasn't mentioned in the video, btw. I have no idea why this is happening because no one can explain even what it could be that's causing it... Are there preferences that can affect this? Has anyone else had this problem?
