Keyboard Shortcut to rotate the cam + Canvas ?

posted to: Lesson 3: Inking

Is there a way to rotate the cam and the template as a whole?

Thank you,

JC

Do you mean the view? You could parent the template to the camera, or vice-versa. I generally like to create a master Empty, and parent both to that.

PS jcdelaronde - Was trying to find your other question about the Eraser so I can answer. Did you by any chance delete it? I'd like to help.

Yeah, for the Eraser, my layer was locked...and I needed a coffee lol ;-P It's all good on that side.
Thanks for the comeback. I appreciate the thought.

Awesome, I'll try the Parenting method.
    Thanks man!

If you look in the extras for PANELS, I think I have some templates set up as collections which can be imported as an asset already set up this way. But I understand you wish to do this for a custom purpose. Not a hard set up to make. Put all in a collection and set the collection as an asset, and you should be able to re-use!

Yeah, it's mostly for inking/drawing...I'm trying to have that Animation disc manoeuvrability so that I don't end up drawing lines at awkward angles and such.

    jcdelaronde,

I am not sure if this is what you mean, but (when not in Camera View) you can use SHIFT+Numpad 4 or SHIFT+Numpad 6 to "Roll' the view left or right.

Hmmm tricky questions. What are you are trying to accomplish? If you move the camera and the canvas as a whole, things will remain the same when you go into camera view. Are you just trying to move things around in the viewport? And you don't want your drawings to go out of frame?

I'm basically trying to rotate the canvas like in Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint.

  • jcdelaronde replied

    Martin, that's it.
Now I have to find a better way to do this when I'm using my stylus.
I'll probably have to keymap those shortcuts to other keys on the Keyboard.
Was it Toon Boom or Phothoshop...I think they had it or the "R" key on the keyboard in order to rotate the whole canvas around.

  • Omar Domenech replied

Ah dangs, I thought that for a moment and didn't include it in my questions. I knew it was for that photoshop behavior where you rotate the canvas to draw.

Maybe you can make a keyframe for both the camera and the canvas. Rotate them however you want and just flip between the keyframes in the timeline to make them the orientation you want in an instant. Better yet, make a master empty and parent the camera and canvas to the empty and just rotate the empty to the orientation you want and keyframe it.

Yup, That's what Paul suggested. I'm giving the Empty method a go and see how that goes.

So you would end up having an Empty to each page correct? or one for the whole bunch of them...I guess at this points it comes down to what works best in terms of management.

    Solution has been resolved.
I just remembered that I bought a TourBox Console.
You can keymap a whole bunch of shortcut keys from multiple softwares on it.
Check it out if you're looking to improve your workflow.

I basically mapped the SHIFT Numpad 4 and SHIFT Numpad 6 to the rotating Knob and voilà!
Now I can turn the whole canvas.
    "It's a beautiful Thang!" ;-P

So if you work exclusively in top view, rotating is a breeze OUTSIDE of Camera view, as suggested above. If you're working solely in orthographic/flat art, this would be the way to go, then just enter camera view when you need to look at the whole piece. DUDE - HOW GOOD IS THE TOURBOX!? On my to-do list: make some custom presets. I have an Elite.

    Thanks Paul for the suggestions.
I'll give it a try for sure.

Custom Presets will come in handy for sure.
TourBox is awesome! Well worth the price. I bought the first generation about 3 years ago now if I recall.
It improved my workflow for sure. I recently bought the Elite version as well. I'm loving it!
What's cool about it is that you can download or upload your keymap settings on their website so that you can share your settings with other users. I got my Clip Studio Paint settings that way and just tweaked a few shortcuts around and voilà!
There's a setting for Blender if I recall on their website.
