bevel modifier not working

Hello,

Blender noob here ;)

As soon as I added the bevel modifier I didn't notice any difference in my work as opposed to the video, where the edges immediately changed.

I turned off the clamp overlay, but that just made everything explode, so I turned down the amount (to the same as in the video). but there are no noticeable differences.

I go on to apply the weight and change the bevel weight in the edit mode, but still, nothing changes...

I don't know what I am doing wrong. Please help.

Couple of things to have in mind. Apply your scale, make sure your scale 1, 1, 1

Check if you have double vertices. Select everything and M -> merge by distance.

Model to scale. Maybe you model is very big or very tiny, making the values in the modifier all wonky.

Check for flipped normals. In your overlays, check you face orientation to see if it's all blue. If not then select everything in edit mode and shift N to recalculate normals.

Try those things, if nothing works come back and we'll figure something out.

    Solution

    Hi Michelle,

If turning off the Clamp Overlap makes the Mesh explode, then that's a sign that the Bevel Modifier is working.

My first guess would be that you didn't Apply the Scale (in Object Mode: CTRL+A > Apply > Scale).

There might also be some double Vertices: in Edit Mode, select everything (A) and press M > Merge > By Distance.

If these things don't solve it, it would be helpful if you could post a link to your .blend file (via Dropbox, GoogleDrive,or...).

Thank you, this comment solved it:

"There might also be some double Vertices: in Edit Mode, select everything (A) and press M > Merge > By Distance."

Could I ask what could cause double vertices, so that I can prevent it in the future?

Maybe you extruded and left the extrusion in the same place. It happens sometimes that you extrude, you think you know what never mind, I don't want that extrude, and then you don't Control + Z far enough and the double vertices stay on top one another.
