Shortcut to get these results

Could I get these results of this up/down stage by Bake Sound the F-Curves and driving the z-axis of the jaw bone?  If not, what is missing from that method?

The mouth is not only moved by one Bone. You have no control. I also think that the volume is not directly correlated to how far the mouth is opened, let alone to the mouth shape.

Might work on a background character or on a robot, You can of course give it a try to see how it looks.

But it would also defeat the purpose of this course to learn lip sync, I think.

Wayne will come up with a better answer, I'm sure.

Although I can see that method working for someone playing the drums. Not for his mouth, but for the foot or a hand.

    That's an interesting thought Benjamin_Bass
It would get you a cheap and dirty starting point for the jaw, but as Spikey mentioned, it's not exactly how the jaw (and mouth) actually moves.
You would still need to clean that up - so it might not save you much time.
