wondering if there's a final solution to the mesh bug that ruins everything with shape keys. imagining I need to rig a character's face with dozens of shape keys, it's gonna be a disaster. :(

Nope, it's not the same issue. My issue is when I sculpt a shape key with multires modifier, the mesh gets ruined with messy spikes.

This is actually a Multires bug., not a Shapekey bug. There is unfortunately no solution yet, but the devs are aware of the issue.
There was even a commit for a 'Multires Heal Brush', but that didn't last 12 hours, before it got reverted; the devs decided to try and find out why this is happening in the first place instead.
I was under the impression that the bug only appeared when sculpting via multires on an active shapekey. So I assumed it wouldn't be an issue when the sculpt is completed and the mesh is rigged with shapekeys. BUT I haven't tested this. For sure something seems unsteady about the current multires + shapekey combo.
