Is rim lighting a commonly used form of lighting? Just to me it looks a little strange, almost as if the light is so strong that it removes some of the detail from the edges of the object.

I'd say it's fairly common. I see it frequently in character renders like these:
Captain America
Batman
Spidey & Hulk
