Scattering grass from geometry nodes VS Scattering grass from hair particles

Question
posted to: Scatter Grass

Hi, it would be helpful for me to understand the advantage and disadvantage when comparing with these two methods. I mean the old course:

If there is no disadvantage to scatter grass by using geometric nodes, does this mean that the hair particle method used in the old course to scatter grass will be out of date please? (Since I heard that the hair particle system will no longer be updated by developers)

    Hi nnaiad ,

At the moment there is a lot of difference between the two methods. For simple distribution of grass, with possibilities for random rotation and size, Geometry Nodes is the better choice, but Particle Hair has some other advantages; it has Children and with those come Clumping, Roughness and Kink. Also the Particles can be influenced by Forcefields (Wind, for instance).

So, it is possible, that this Course will become outdated in the future, but for now it is still relevant.

Yeah I'd say that until particles become totally obsolete, for now they are still useful since the method that will be replacing it is still not at its full potential. So don't be afraid of still using particles, at the least it is great to learn them so that in the future you can appreciate what has gotten better and why, have the knowledge in your head to compare the evolution of things in Blender.

Thank you! I thought that I could completely skip the old course. But based on what you said, I couldn't, at least for now.
