I'm having trouble understanding the point of having shared data. Why would you want six different things to share the same data. Is it for ease of animation? Also, when you added the cube to the sphere, if you were to leave the cube on the sphere but make it "invisible" and then import it into a possible game, would the sphere now behave like a cube and not a sphere? Thanks

What happen if you want to have in your scene five objects where each object is the same. If you modify the geometry in one object you are modifying all object with shared data. Else, you will need modify each object five times.

Does this result in a smaller file?

If Blender is like 3D Studio Max, where this type of thing is called an "instance", this could potentially reduce the file size and speed up the viewport performance as well.
