I still have troubles managing transitions

posted to: Obstacle Drops II

I spent more time on the original obstacle ball drop than I like to admit, and I still have a bit of trouble managing the transitions.

Keeping the correct momentum when falling off the edges of the platforms was really tricky for me.

This is close.  I could spend hours more tweaking the curves, but I think I need to move on.  Now for the complex obstacle drop.  At the least I need to step away from this animation for a minute.

Edit:

It still slides a bit, but now the rolling repeats at least:

    Hi wardred ,

Did you forget something, maybe? Your ball is sliding in stead of rolling...

You are further than I am at the moment..man, animation really is hard :)  The dropping itself doesn't seem too bad to me, but I am not Wayne..My eyes aren't that good yet.

    Ack,

It rolls in the first loop.  Forgot the modifier to make it roll in the rest.  Let me get that.

    That's better!

    A little less sliding.

Stepping away now, for real.  This is close, and I guess if I came back to it in a day or two I could get it just right.

Dude that looks and feels good to me. But I'm no Wayne so don't take my word for it too much. Maybe Wayne will come with laser sharp animator eyes and spot a frame where something is happening. And still it'll probably be like 99.999% great. Unless Wayne spots two frames then it'll be 99.99% great.

Its getting there, my critique would be that it is a bit too fast. The roll down the first platform should be a more gradual acceleration, it probably shouldn't reach the speed you have before dropping off the edge to the next platform. Then start again with a gradual acceleration down the second platform in the opposite direction.

Basically it is, too fast, too quickly.

Its on the ground by frame 55, i think you could slow this down to about 80 frames.

Then it speeds up at about frame 60 before slowing down in the roll.
With no slope on the ground there should only be slowing no speed up.

    Thanks everyone!

    Adrian,

Thanks for your notes.  Speeding up where it shouldn't and/or abruptly braking at the transitions was one of the things I fought with a bit.
