Slow Frame Rate

posted to: Animate on Path: 2

I have a pretty decent PC, but I'm only getting around 9 fps when animating the truck along the curve.  With the exception of the track, everything else is hidden.  Any suggestions on how to improve this?

    Solution

    Untitled 3.pngHi,

This was a problem for me, this is what I did don't know if it will help.

    1. set simplify to 0

    2.  in the timeline set the playback sync option to frame dropping,  this will not effect the render.  Wayne mentions this is one of the videos.

    3. I got burned by the particle grass, which is under the track.    I also turned off a lot of the stuff for the viewport render when I wanted to just see what the track and truck looked like.

    4.  make sure you are in viewport shading

this is what it looks like for me

This worked for me, good luck.

    ddanmelt, ttanya53 is spot on.

Make sure you use the monitor symbol to 'Disable in Viewport' rather than just the eye symbol, which just means it is hidden from view.

The first option above, Simplify will make the biggest difference. If you only change the viewport setting to 0, you won't need to worry about this again when you do a full F12 render.

ttanya53, thank you!   It's running at 24 fps now :)

    Appreciate both of your help!

Oh with the Simplify setting you can also set this to disable child particles.  This will mean you don't have to mess with any of the meshes to adjust the particles (ie - disable them in the viewport manually or anything)
It just becomes a one button push - or even better - add it to your quick favourites so you can work at speed, then quickly switch back to spit out a viewport render.
As Tanya said - the simplfy will not affect a real render (unless you adjust the default settings)

I think I've mentioned all the things you can do to speed up the playback in many different videos (and courses)

But here's a little recap of what will slow down your playback.

Material view (or Render View) - stick to solid.
The amount of 3d viewports and things that need to be shown moving when you press play.  This includes some editor windows like the Graph editor.  It has to draw the curves so if you have it to show all selected animation curves, the more controls you have selected, the slower it will be.
Subdivision surfaces are a big killer.  Each level is multiplied by the previous level x4.  1 face becomes 4 at 1 level - and 16 faces at level 2.
The more things to move - the harder for the computer.

The amount of objects it has to draw.  If it's not important for you to work with - hide it.
Change the playback from the default "play every frame" to "sync to audio" or "frame dropping".  It will skip frames if it can't keep up which will give you a more accurate sense of the timing.

    Hope this helps.
