Mulitple objects vs one object (I'm a complete noob)

Hi, first blender project, I had a question.

In the tutorial videos scene collection, under his console collection, there is only the cube. In mine, I have each object I created (circles and planes.) Why is this different? Did I miss a step where all the objects were joined somehow? I can still follow, but going to edit mode makes it more difficult to accomplish the tasks. Also, trying to understand the program and feel like I am missing something.

Any help would be great!

    Hi Spencer ,

sometimes it's better to have 1 Object and sometimes it's easier to have multiple. It's partly a preference, but there are situations where one is better than the other.

How you probably got in this situation, when you add an Object, while in Edit Mode, that new Object becomes part of the Object that is in Edit Mode. When you add an Object, while in Object Mode, it creates a new Object.

Now, you have several Objects and you want to make them 1 Object, like in the tutorial? Select all the Object that you want to join, with the (in this case) Cube last (to make it the Active Object). Then use CTRL+J to join them.

In the opposite situation, say you have a Cube with a Circle added in Edit Mode, then you can select that Circle and press P > Separate > Selection. Then the Circle will be a new Object in Object Mode (with a red outline) and the Cube will still be in Edit Mode. so If you then want to make edits to the Circle you'll have to go into Object Mode and the select the Circle and go into Edit Mode.

That was a lot of words, but just try it a few times...you'll get the hang of it soon enough; it's really quite easy.

I hope this helps and have fun on your Blender journey with the help and guidance of CGCookie.

Also after you separate your objects, it's good practice to get their origin points in the right place. You can select both objects holding shift and right click - Set Origin - Origin To Geometry.
