Inset Buttons

Question Modeling

Hello CG Cookie People

I hope you are all very well. Firstly, I've just started to learn Blender through CG Cookie and am loving it. Especially ythe potential to create. At the moment I’ve gots loads of ideas but zero ability. Anyway I'm on lesson 3 (Filling The Outline) of the PRESS START project and I've encountered a problem that I cannot solve. When I try to select the face of the button the selected area is larger than the area of the button (see image 1).

I have to select and deselect numerous times before the face of the button is selected independently.

Then, when I've finally got the face of the button selected, as per the instructions, I make that face inset (using the I hotkey) and then move that face down on the Z axis (see image 2).

But when I move that face down on the Z axis the lines that connect the inner face to the outer face disappear (see image 3).

So when I extrude the face up along the Z axis there is no indentation.

This sequence of keystrokes works for the other button no problem (see image 4).

But the same happens with the cross shaped buttons  (see image 5&6).

No indentation between Can anyone please help?

Thank you.

My very best,

Jason

    Hi jjasonwilde ,

you are not alone; have a look at this question from a fellow citizen:

    https://cgcookie.mavenseed.com/community/12251-help-i-can-only-indent-one-circle-button

You have basically the same , or similar problem.

Maybe this helps; there are overlapping Faces like this (for clarity I only highlight 1 or 2 Faces at the time, I hope this is understandable; all 3 are the same piece):

    Hey jjasonwilde,

Great to hear your loving it at CGCookie, looks like you have considerably more ability than zero, your console is coming along nicely.
As spikeyxxx mentioned your not alone with the problem you encountered, this is one of the common problems when learning Blender and with experience you will learn how to avoid them.

Good luck with the rest of the course and your continuous Blender journey.

    Happy Blending!

I remember all the headaches and pain from understanding how a mesh behaves, I can tell you Jason that that goes away fast and then it's of to the races, you get hooked on how awesome it is to 3D model.
