Hi dear CG Cookie Community,
after being here for three weeks now and learning hard, I want to introduce myself again and open this thread to show progress and ask questions.
My name is Phillip, I'm from Berlin in Germany and I'm 35 years old. I've been working for a large corporation in lower management for 10 years, I'm a nerd, roleplayer and gamer. I'm discovering more and more that I need to prioritize my creativity in my life to be happy. That's why I write thrillers and now I'm drawn to 3d design.
After a little look at a youtube tutorial, 3d design has completely enchanted me and I hope to be able to express my creativity with it in the future and learn a lot in this great community.
Since I started on 5/18/22, I'll put a little collage of the progress so far in here.
Thanks for this great site and the opportunity to discover something new in my life with you <3
Best regards and stay healthy everyone!
Phillip
Hi Barakaz,
You have made great progress in a short period, the donut though, could use a cup of coffee with it.
Great work so far, keep it going.
Happy Blending.
Right now, I'm in the fundamentals of texturing and i have no clue, when i will be ready to do such things for myself :D
( @jlampel ) My submission text for the lava texture:
I have struggled quite a bit with the task of lava texture. The biggest difficulty was the emission of the lava and its control for the grouped switches. Now you can determine the thickness of the cracks and surfaces, their emission, and their spread and color.
Unfortunately, I couldn't get the lava to act as if it were inside the cracks. Despite everything, I learned a lot during this submission and I believe that this exam will help me to make "simpler" textures.
I'll try to show here the setting options, the orientation screen and groups I've tinkered in the nodes. Maybe you can give me some helpful tips.

Nice result! The controls you added are just the kind of thing I was looking for, and it shows you know what you're doing when it comes to nodes.
To get the lava and the cracks to line up, they need to be part of the same texture from the beginning - so there's one overall greyscale result where the dark (or light, it's arbitrary) parts are the deepest parts of the cracks and the deeper they are the more likely they'll fill with lava. The lava mask is then just a map range version of the displacement texture. You have a really great crackly texture for the lava, so I would use that for the base for the rock as well and then detail the rock in the lighter portions of that texture.
Hope that helps!
Following the Katana brand, I have textured an "Oni" motorcycle. The metal body is to remind of Damascus steel. I have tried to give the individual parts a certain used-look.
