If I attempt the extrude region at 4:34 I just get the option to extrude the whole area in the z direction and nothing else. At 4:50 if I attempt a scale (via S key or scale button) I get an hour glass sort of shape rather than a clean 90 deg angle when the middle section is scaled down in the video. I can however achieve the latter effect via the 'extrude region (Vertex Normals)'. Is this all just due to me being on version 2.78 and the video being out of date?

Thanks Jonathan, not sure what caused the issue at 4:34, but I can see that at 4:50 it is essential to have pressed 'extrude region' beforehand, (even if you just right click and don't actually extrude). I just presumed that you could just go to 'scale' after selecting the faces and just scale the central portion, but I can see now this is not so. I had also not noticed before that even in the video you are scaling the central block in all directions. I can see that to retain clean 90 deg angles you need to scale down in X, then Y.

Jim I'm using Blender 2.79 on a Mac and I found that I had to click Extrude, then Region (vertex normals) to get a clean inset.
