z-fighting in flat surfaces

When I look at a cloud from below, something like z-fighting occurs on the ground. This is probably due to my steep vector curve. But I want a flat bottom. Any idea how to make flat surfaces fluffier?

You want a flat but still fluffy bottom as opposed to flat like a table top?

  • Maximilian Erl(Max-Erl) replied

Right! On the one hand flat, but at the same time fluffy. Maybe a bit like cotton. Actually, I'm already satisfied with the result, but unsightly stripes appear on the floor, which remind of a shading error.

Where I've drawn red, it looks like it's flickering.

    Hey Max-Erl ,

does it help when you increase the Volumetrics > Samples  in your Eevee Render Settings?

  • Maximilian Erl(Max-Erl) replied

No, unfortunately not. the problem only shifts and the flicker becomes smaller.

If you post a download link to your .blend file I'll be happy to take a closer look. The best way to do this is by uploading your file to Dropbox, Google Drive, Mega, or equivalent file hosting service then copy + pasting the share link here.

Thank you very much, here is the file:

Thanks for the file Max-Erl! Unfortunately I haven't been able to figure out why the depth segmentation is so extreme in this example...I've spent 20 minutes tweaking a slew of render settings. The volumetric ones have the most effect, as you might guess:

But even with these "max quality" settings, the ridges remain very noticeable. I've never experienced them this bad. Maybe spikeyxxx can troubleshoot this to better results, but my only theory is that the clouds shapes are too rounded and simplistic. Perhaps breaking them up with noise textures will hide the depth segmentation.

    Apologies for a less-than-satisfying answer :/

@theluthier and Max-Erl I actually have seen something like this before, but have not been able to figure out what is causing it...my guess is that it is some limitation of Eevee that shows in certain specific cases, but I rarely use Eevee myself and can hardly be called an expert.

If, somewhere in the future I find out what is happening and how to avoid these issues, I will let you know.

    • Thank you!

I have an animation with a cloud. And actually I'm happy with it.
Unfortunately, there is a very unsightly flickering in the animation. Unfortunately, I do not know what I can do against the flickering / shaking.
    Here is the animation:

And here would be the blend file:

I also recently posted a post about this in the forum, spikeyxxx helped me, but we still couldn't solve the problem:

    I'd be happy for help...
