couldn't handle it on 3.1.2

posted to: Cloudscape

The best way to finish this would be doing it on 2.83, downloading it and create it on that old version. On the other hand you wanna be able to do it on Version 3 but this seems almost impossible. the thickness, the compactness of the clouds are not nearly as you want it.

best is to always start a course when it goes online and not risking to handle it later with a new version where things have moved, renamed or even have been replaced.

but thank you, it was worth a try

There are a few differences since 2.83, but what has the biggest impact on this course, is the following:

Thanks for the report and recommendation to use Blender 2.83 for best results. This course is high on my list for potentially retiring. Or I could add a new chapter about updates to Eevee volumetrics but then is there value to the original 2.8 chapters...

What do you think mastart spikeyxxx?

    @theluthier

"...I could add a new chapter about updates to Eevee volumetrics..."

I don't think it's something that students can easily adjust some values and get a similar result.

Now, 2.83LTS is end of life next month (June 2022) and the 2.93LTS 'fixed' the Eevee Volumetric Shadows...

What I would do (but I'm not an average person, so don't take this too seriously), is to add a 'warning' to only use 2.83 to 2.92 Versions for this and add a Bonus Excercise to get a similar result, using 2.93+...

But I'm not sure how easy it is for Windows or Mac users to have more than one Blender Version at the same time on their Computer...

So, personaly, I wouldn't retire it, but I also wouldn't try to update it with some 'new Eevee Volumetric Shadow corrections', if that is even possible (and I don't think so).

Sorry for the messiness of the argument, but I'm trying to get my thought process across and that just isn't something pretty...

I don't think (like Spikey mentioned) it is easy to adjust values for a similar result.

The course, "creating clouds" is so interesting and fascinating that a new course probably would be the best but is probably the most time-consuming way for you. I can not imagine how much work it is to record something like this.

I once started the course but didn't finish it... my fault... should have done it but then on the other hand, would I be able to make clouds on 3.1? probably not... I would know how it is done but couldn't get the right result....

If I could choose, I would ask for a new recording. But who am I to ask for such a job done.... or doing a live streaming on Youtube....?

I also looked on YT for clouds and found "Default Cube" who does it with  a Volume (add - Volume - Empty) which is also a clever way of making a cloud shape. But I prefer your way because it seems to me a more "artistic" way of creating it. But this is just my opinion... so at the end of the day I guess it is up to you if you wanna dive into a new course or not ;)but I think this is the only way at the end of the day.... 2.8 is long gone and students are probably not interested any more...

    Thank you Kent and Spikey

Thanks for the input spikeyxxx mastart! I'm thinking I could add a new chapter that completely re-teaches the creation of a cloud with current Eevee tools rather than a video simply outlining updates without applying them. Since Eevee's volumetric updates are so significant it would need to be a fresh application.

Along with that I could add a warning about the 2.83 content.

That said, my teaching schedule is pretty much booked for the next year 😵‍💫 But at some point I definitely want to update this course!
