need help

I cannot get into the exercise

  • wardred replied

    eedward13,
The questions showed up for me above the title:The Art of Lighting Quiz".
Can you tell a little bit more about what's happening?
Do you get an error message?
          Does something else happen?
Can you send a screen shot of what you're seeing?
Have you taken the quiz already?

I'd suggest opening an incognito window or a private browsing window, login to CGCookie, and see if you get your exercise.

       Good Luck!

Before the migration, we have other students help us and grade our assignments. I kinda miss that old development.

  • edward13 replied

It does not tell me anything.

I try to get in and it just takes me to the top of the page. That is it.

  • wardred replied

    eedward13 - That is unusual.

If another browser and/or incognito mode doesn't work, I don't know what to say.

  • edward13 replied

well, there are more than one

eedward13 - Sorry if I came off as dismissive; I'm not part of the CGCookie team.  If that didn't help I don' have a lot of control.  I've heard that some of the lessons may be out of order on the new site and you may be skipping some of the content needed before you can answer the questions for this lesson.  Or it could be a bug due to the site migration.

I've asked the CGCookie team if there's a place we should be posting issues related to the site.

  • edward13 replied

    but I am not skipping

This become a much longer / more rambling question than I intended.

I didn't answer your specific issue about the course you're having troubles with.  That'll have to come from the CGCookie team.

I hope there's at least a little value in the rest of it.

eedward13, I'm sorry you're getting frustrated.  The site just got migrated and is probably still going through growing pains.

I'm not sure what the team's working hours are, but it's also the weekend.

I'm not quite sure how to ping the instructors like Kent, but there are only 4 of them.  Even if you can ping them directly, it may take a minute for them to respond.

There's posting questions to the lesson, like you did, the Q&A section of the site, and the discord channel. . . just realize that CGCookie isn't a massive community.  If you want quick answers to things, you'll need to expand your community and do a fair amount of Google/YouTube searching.

I think almost any technical field will involve a fair amount of Googling, multiple forums and/or YouTube videos to track down specific issues.  No one source is going to have all the answers, even college classes / professors.  There's a joke that most programmer or IT folk are really just good at web searches.  Even after having gone through college courses, there will likely always be specific questions that can be answered quickest by seeing if anybody else has asked the question first.

Whether or not the existing list of courses add enough value to continue with your subscription is something you'll have to judge for yourself.  Each of the topics you listed is really broad, and each takes a fair amount of time to delve into.  If you have an animation or rigging question it might be better to task:

"I'm trying to find information about. . . cartoony facial animation".  Or if you've found that, but are having problems with something in a particular course to ask specifically about the trouble you encountered.  It's difficult to answer overly broad questions.

It sounds like what you'd really like is a medium/low poly course that goes over everything from developing a 2d character concept / model sheet to making the sculpt / model, rigging it, materials, texturing, animating it, and using it in either a movie or in a game.  I don't know that there's anything quite like that on the site, but there's definitely lowish poly character creation, modeling, sculpting, rigging, animating, etc.  One can take the existing courses and get from A to Z.

Whatever your question, try to include as much detail as possible.  See my follow up questions to your original post for the type of thing that can help narrow down the issue you're having.

CGCookie has a fair number of classes on rigging.  For instance: the vonbotts course.  Arranging content in a way that's good for beginners/intermediate users/ and advanced courses is challenging.

I'm not sure what you mean by low poly.  It used to be that low poly is what you had in the original Final Fantasy 7 /  Mario64 characters are what people meant, but that's a level of low poly that isn't used anymore unless on wants that specific style.  Most systems have moved well past that.  "Medium poly" is probably the minimum one's likely to work with anymore.  By that I man something like: Low Poly Hair - The original class that went with that seems to be missing.

There are times when truly low poly assets are still needed.  RTSes with a lot of characters come to mind, but an example of what you're looking for could go a long ways to getting pointed in the correct direction.

    Hey eedward13,

I have checked the course for issues, including the quizzes and exercises.

I cannot see any problem with this course.

As asked for above by wardred , being a little more specific on the issue would be beneficial to receiving the answers you seek.

The community here at CGCookie are extremely helpful and awesome people. There are members ranging from beginner to advanced users of Blender here who are always willing to help whenever you need it.

The quiz, where you posted this question, requires you to select an answer to the question displayed before moving to the next.

The final exercise in the course, Match Lighting a Digital Portrait, doesn't have a video attached explaining the exercise. There is guidance for this exercise in written format on the exercise page.

If you find you need assistance with anything CGCookie related that the community may not be able to resolve, try the help button on the bottom right of your screen.

    Happy Blending!
