Pokemon Challenge 2022 - Kingler - WIP

Contests and Challenges

Hi all, here is my WIP thread for the Feb Pokemon challenge: Kingler. I actually wanted to do Krabby but decided to go with Kingler as it is slightly more interesting with its asymmetrical claw. I only watched 1st season of pokemon aeons ago but I do remember Ash' Krabby and Kingler being the underdog champion. Making this pokemon bringing back so much joyful childhood memory.

Here is my references:

First Blocking

Not sure if I should sculpt then retopo or should I do Multires Modifiers then sculpt. I guess I will play around with both and see how it goes.

Glad you're keeping the cookie. Suggestion: What about putting a bite in the cookie. Like on the CGCookie logo.

  • Mel C(melinmotion) replied

Ohhh a very good idea wendy10698 !  Let's hope I can finish this challenge in time!

Edit: Omg, I just googled what a bitten cookie looks like inside. Not sure if I got the skill for it  😅  We'll see...

  • Wendy Robinson(wendy10698) replied

melinmotion What if you put the bitten part on top edge of the cookie facing away from the camera. The PRESS START game console has a bitten looking piece to it. Idk if that would help.

  • Mel C(melinmotion) replied

As per wendy10698 idea, I made the cookie based on the CG Cookie logo and not worrying too much about the bitten bits detail as it will face away from the camera. Feeling a bit naughty destroying CG Cookie logo like this haha.

Anyway, I don't think it's ready to bake yet. I feel that the composition and sculpting can be improved but will do this later.

    Awesome!

  • Jeewon (jeewon) replied

    You made me hungry!

  • Wendy Robinson(wendy10698) replied

I love it! That looks so cool! I attempted to make a cookie once and it came out looking like Play-Doh. Yours looks awesome. I love the detail. If you darken up the top parts of the bumps in the middle it might make it look more evenly cooked.

  • Mel C(melinmotion) replied

Thanks wendy10698 Now that I look at it again, you are right..the cookie kinda looks burnt on edges and kinda dry too lol.

  • adrian replied

That cookie looks delicious, will you bake me a batch?

  • Sébastien Lenaerts(slenaerts) replied

Oh so you've literally been baking 😋, nice work! Love it

  • Mel C(melinmotion) replied

Just another progress shot.  Can you tell this whole challenge was done following the Pothead Tutorial? (which I have not actually finished lol).

I am very allergic to crab and other crustaceans so I actually have no idea what crab shells look like IRL. Looking at online pics, some crabs seem to have very rough texture and some with smooth texture.  Going for smooth look here as it looks cuter this way.

    Stay safe everyone!

  • jammingammon replied

Very nice! I like the texture on the claws.

  • Keith (beefkeef) replied

Yea looks great! I can almost hear those claws snapping! 👍

  • Jeewon (jeewon) replied

Texture is so realistic! Very believable crab shell in my opinion.

  • Ben Reichel(notcastanza) replied

I love that you are keeping the cookie.  It will help give extra depth to the story of the scene.

  • Mel C(melinmotion) replied

Ok guys, it's all done. Thank you so much for all the nice words and encouragement during this challenge. Looking forward to the next one! Fighting!

Thanks again everyone! Here is a 🍪 for you! A bit dry but hope you like it. 😊

  • Wendy Robinson(wendy10698) replied

Wow, it looks so real! I feel like I could pick it up. And then shake it off cuz it would snap my finger.

He's saying "If you want this cookie back you're gonna have to fight me for it."

  • Vue Thao(euv) replied

Haha you made the cookie 🍪.

This is a great piece of art. 👍

  • Mel C(melinmotion) replied

Thanks wendy10698 ! Yes this plucky crab will protect his cookie at all cost! 😋 But seriously, making a 3d cookie is so hard! I guess because we are familiar with what a cookie looks like in real life and can't help to compare.
