Help me plan for my future!

Hello everyone, I have decided that I would like to peruse being a 3D Modeling artist. What sort of post secondary education would you all recommend? I live in Ontario Canada, and from what I can see, most colleges expect you to be skilled in 2D art before doing 3D courses, for this reason I am considering getting a fine arts degree. Am I on the right track? Your insights will be appreciated. Thank you!

I think pursuing a fine arts degree is a wonderful start. I attended art school for a time, and the design principles I learned - the essential foundations - have supported my work every since. In fact, to me, they're crucial skills whether you're a 2D or a 3D artist. Those skills you will use your entire career, which is why most 3D programs require design principles and mathematics.

And if you find school later becomes too expensive, you really do not need a college degree to be a 'professional' 3D Modeling artist. I have 2 degrees and neither are in art related fields, and I've been a professional 2D and 3D artist, editor, and award-winning filmmaker for the last 23-years. It was my portfolio and my experience that won me those past jobs.

However, the principles of design that I did learn while attending art school, things like perspective, symmetry, contrast, line, color theory, etc., it was those principle concepts that made my work stand out.

So, to answer your question, yes, I think you're on the right track, especially if you're an undergrad. Post a fine arts degree, consider focusing on a specific modality like just modeling or just animation because in the real-world, the old phrase, "a Jack of all trades and a master of none" is very common, so set yourself apart. Master something.

As you learn how to become a fine artist, if you have a good computer and access to Blender, then do what John Lasseter from Pixar told me one, "start modeling and animating."

    Good luck!

Thanks for sharing your experience, it really helped me to make a decision, and I think and feel that it is the right one. By the way, I really hope that I will not have a lot of writing assignments, as writing was never my strong point, plus, I use a lot of energy to finish them. Besides this, I waste a lot of time finding some good articles to help me with some tips and I also use an editing service which I have found after reading the Papercheck reviews indeed to edit all my essays as I make many mistakes.
