The Legendary Quest to Finally Make Some Grass that Doesn't Look Completely Terrible

Several days ago, I embarked on a journey to make the grass in my badlands scene look somewhat decent.  Along the way, I nearly sank into quicksand...

Completely bungled an attempt to forge a mighty blade (of grass)...

And nearly got killed by a horde of tentacle-covered abominations.

So far, modeling over a silhouette and using the sapling add-on have both proven quite fruitless.  Next I will try to hand-model a grass tuft.  I watched the grass course, but it didn't cover the type of grass I'm trying to make.  I want to make some tough, dry grass that sort of looks like tumbleweed, and for that I think a group of curves will work nicely.

Will I discover the Ancient Legendary Artifact of Not Terrible Looking Grass before the dark lord does?  Find out next time!

I tried using the skin modifier, but soon found out that it is more suited for cacti.  But Perhaps I could add a particle system to make it look more like grass...?

    No.  I can't nest particles.

At least this time it doesn't look like it wants to eat me.

It seems all hope is lost.  The dark lord appears, and an epic duel occurs.  He uses his dark powers of darkness to throw me against a wall.  My helmet falls off, and my sword is thrown into the abyss.  He swings his dark sword of darkness at me.  I duck just in time, and he only manages to cut off a little bit of hair.  It falls to the ground...

Then I realized.  Hair was my answer!  I had one shot at this.

Something that might be worth trying is the Ivy Generator Addon:

The selected Plane is where the ivy grows towards and the 3D Cursor is where it starts...Lots of different effects are possible when changing the settings...
