changing the viewport display colors in solid mode didn't change anything in the shader tab (blender 2,92) but it did when going to the layout, lighting and sculpting tab. perhaps there is a way to also let that work in the shader tab
It should, but the Shading Workspace (if that is what you mean) uses Material Preview Mode and not Solid!
Oops, was Material not the default in your Viewport Shading dropdown menu?

I don't know if it wasn't before, but i just opened the provided example as is. Hopefully other students can benefit from my confusion
