Collab2021 - WIP - hapit - chimneys

Collaborations

I very welcome constructive feedback.

I'm in a friendly competition with one of the team leads (duerer). That will be interesting.

I did some modelling tests. I'm not sure about the level of low poly.

I never did realtime / game engine models before.

Is 1 enough with normal map and texture?

Version 2 is the simple geo from 1 with beveled edges and scaled the middle one in.

Or 3 with each brick is the same model but rotated.

    Which version should I use?

Is this enough for the first week?

duerer Maybe we can share our thoughts about the cimneys.

    Thx

Since the idea is that most of us will be baking a high poly model onto the lo poly version. I personally think those individual bricks on '3' is more what we are looking for on the lo poly version but that is a great question that @theluthier can answer.

NUTS I swear I typed out a big reply yesterday but forgot to send 😣

#1 will indeed be [mostly] good enough for a final chimney model. Only additions I may suggest adding are some bevels to knock off the razor-sharp edges: turning each single edge into 2. Then possibly moving those around so they're not perfectly straight; feeling more stylized. The same theme I pushed in the treasure chest course.

#3 is a good candidate for the "hi-res" version of the asset intended for baking as a normal map to #1. But you don't need to really worry about this till next week.

Is this enough for the first week?

Yes actually! Pretty simple first week, I know. I figured it's best to start really simple so everyone can ease into the collab environment. It will get more involved the next 3 weeks.

Even if you only posted a pic of #1 it would be a passing grade from me. But seeing how you're thinking through the process further, I LOVE to see that. You get full points for week 1. Good work hapit!

@theluthier Something went wrong with synching the shared folder.

It did work three days ago on my mac. Today it didn't start any more. I reinstalled the sync software and reused the formally synched folder. I got the warning message that 6 files had a conflict and a copy was saved. I saw the ...(1)... files.

If linking goes wrong or there are old files then it's my fault. I'm afraid of deleting the wrong file.

Hope someone can check the files and delete the old file.

    I'm sorry.

  • Shawn Blanch(blanchsb) replied

Don't stress the syncing too much. We'll define it in Week 2 on the approach.

    @theluthier  Homework week two.

Made two sculpted stones one cube for the mortar and the top.
The rest of the stones is rotated and stacked and then tapered with a lattice.

I think I need two more individual stones to get a more variety.

  • Shawn Blanch(blanchsb) replied

Honestly I don't think I see the pattern to much hapit . You are welcome to add more variation if you'd like though.

The stones are a little harsh and exact per the art and not as stylized as they could be I think but all in all I really like them.

definitely lots of opportunity during the texturing stage to get these bad boys to pop!

  • Kent Trammell replied

Very clever way of building the chimney! Minimal input for maximum output - LOVE IT 👍

Initially I didn't notice the pattern of repetition but now I can't unsee it ha. So yes I agree that two more unique stone sculpts should be enough to hide any pattern.

My only stylistic note is that the stones are quite precise. To me it feels more modern than the theoretical medieval-ish era I expect our spice vender to reside. I'd like to see less sharp / precise edges in favor of a more chiseled look. Here's a quick video I made for chimney sculpting, maybe it will help illustrate what I mean:

hapit clever idea to use the "Lattice Modifier" 😀👍! Maybe, you could use in the bottom part of the chimney a stone pattern with 3 stones on the longer side so that the corner stone in the bottom center doesn't look that stretched.

  • Kent Trammell replied

Tell me there's a pending update on your chimney hapit 🙏

  • hapit replied

Family didn't let me have enough time, but i'll catch up.

  • Kent Trammell replied

Hey I get that - totally understandable 👍

  • Shawn Blanch(blanchsb) replied

No worries hapit! Life tends to get in the way sometimes. Keep going if you have the chance!

  • Ingmar Franz(duerer) replied

hapit The family always has priority 😀! I'm looking forward to your textured chimney 😀!

    Finished sculpting.

The normal bake had ugly artifacts. I think I have to redo the lowploy model.

  • Kent Trammell replied

Ooof yeah maybe a retopo is in order. The bake looks like they LO and HI grew misaligned over time.

You're welcome to continue working on your chimney after the Collab officially ends this week. Just mention me in your WIP thread with the final and I'll be sure to include it in the final assembly. NOTE: If you do this and don't get a confirmation message from me, keep tagging me till I confirm.

  • Ingmar Franz(duerer) replied

hapit I very much like how your sulpted chimney matches the artwork 😀👍! So, I'm looking forward to your fully textured version 😀!
