Texture baking is not an easy job. I also often have problems with it and have to do everything again regularly. It's often a lot of trial and error. Don't give up ;). I'm still not finished with sculpting...... where to find the time.

New sculpted lantern body part. Hopefully now the normal map will work better.

But this evening I'm not trying anymore. Need some sleep ;)

I see what you were talking about now. Great work!

    Homework Submission - Week 3 - lantern

    @theluthier

finished normal and cavity map / baked on high resolution 8k/4k and scaled down for GoogleDrive to 1024px

That was a long way to the normal map with a lot of doing again and again.
To do the sculpt of the lantern body again was a good decision, I still need several attemps and it tooks some hours to bake a decent normal map.

For the cavity I used DirtyVertexPaint, was curious how it works.
The DirtyVertex gave me different result for each part. I adjust the brightness.

Kent said there is no color map needed for the lantern - we use the cavity.

I made a simple material and also a glass material.

So it looks so far in EVEE with a little point lamp und sun.

Now where I can see, how the maps going together I am not sure about the metal. I am not really happy with it.
Sculpting the body part for the third time? I`m not sure. Maybe a painted color map is necessary after all?
On the other side I am totally happy to got an result this week at all. Was not likely two days ago.
Still a lot to do an to learn.

I like this so much. It's got that hammered metal look going for it. It possibly a bit dark compares to the reference. But maybe that's the lighting. Metals look is heavily determined by what it has to reflect around it. Try to find a sunny outdoor hdri as you make tweaks this week to get an accurate preview of how it will look.  Super job for this week.

  • Mona Loren(monaloren) replied

Thanks for the HDRI tip. So far I haven't used one here. I also think it looks a little too dark. Finding the right one will definitely make a difference. I also can tweak the material a little bit.

Amazing job mmonaloren! Your lanterns are lovely and DONE (!) as far as I can tell πŸ‘

You can kick back and relax during week 4 or tweak whatever you like. I personally don't think your lanterns need a dedicated color map but your'e welcome to explore that for the last week!

  • Mona Loren(monaloren) replied

@theluthier Thank you Kent for all the work you put into this collab21.
I've learned a lot in the 3 weeks and now I'm slowly getting into sculpting. It's a lot of fun.
Since I would also like to try out wood and stone, I thought about trying out something like that:

First try, nothing finished. DoesnΒ΄t have the edges I wanted. Sculpten looks easier than it is.

  • Kent Trammell replied

Brilliant extension of your lantern asset! You should do a presentation render and/or turntable of your lantern on the post when you're done.

Thank you Kent for all the work you put into this collab21

You're very kind mmonaloren. Thank you for contributing! πŸ™‚ 🀝

    week 4 - lantern variation

In this last week i wanted to try sculpting wood and stone.
There are still some issues, but this is what i was able to do within my time this week.

I practiced a lot to get handy with the scrape brush.I found this brush is not easy to understand and often does not what I would have expected. But it gets better every day. I have a lot of fun with sculpting and focused on it these week. Therefore only a basic render setup with an HDRI.

The last 4 weeks were very intensive and I would have needed more time for many things. But my challenge was to end up the things in time and I did it it ;)It was fun and I learned a lot. Many thanks to @theluthier for the time he spent for this collab.

    Just for fun:

This looks so good! Thank you for all the hardwork you did over the collab. It absolutely shows. I really enjoyed watching your progress these 4 weeks. I hope you keep posting future works. Keep it up!

I love your render setup! It looks great! The compositing really sets a mood. It reminds me of world of warcraft, but this is way better,  so not a great comparison. πŸ˜…β€

thank you so much  phoenix4690 . I should really think about opening a polybook. It also would forces me to practice regularly. Thank you for your support during this collab :)
