so this is the first block out of the wood beams. I need to do a bit more detailing on the wood and make them more stylised but we have front and back wood beams. keen to get some feedback

  • Shawn Blanch(blanchsb) replied

That is looking great matbev There is a reply from Vadim regarding the back of the house on Ingmar's page: https://cgcookie.com/questions/14282-collab-2021-wip-duerer#answer-50793
That may help with layout of the wood trim.

  • Mat Bevan(matbev) replied

Thats awesome blanchsb i shall use that as a reference for the back of the piece

heres my WIP of some of the sculpting of the beams. ive linked alot of my beams up so i dont have to do so much work and will be applying these once i have baked the normals.

Ive tried to keep these quite subdued as there is alot of beam on the exterior so i didnt want it to pull to much focus. also with them being full beams i dont think you would get much splintering at the edges.

any feedback would be great as I'm really not super confident with sculpting. so any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated

  • Kent Trammell replied

Looking good matbev! I think you've made a great choice in keeping your beams subdued: Not wanting to pull to much focus is the right mind set - well done 👍

My only note is that the long vertical board doesn't seem to have any deeper crevices like the other boards:

Adding a couple deeper crevices to the longest board should make it match better the other boards while still not drawing too much focus. Or am I wrong and the matcap is hiding such crevices?

  • Mat Bevan(matbev) replied

Hi @theluthier that's some great feedback there. thank you. yeah I totally agree, i think the longer one definitely needs some more crevices added in. I'm glad that what i'm doing seems to be working as well and is hitting the brief.

Glad you agree about the more subdued beams as well. I shall continue along this path then with the other beams.

    Cheers

  • Shawn Blanch(blanchsb) replied

I couldn't agree more matbev. It's looking good but just keep going more with the same. Perhaps a little grain flow is in order to maintain the stylized feel with the other wood.

Not quite as drastic as below but this definitely speaks to "grain flow" you know?

  • Mat Bevan(matbev) replied

I completely agree blanchsb it does need more of that stylised look to it. I think what I've got there is a good base but definitely needs more of that grain flow.

thank you so much that's really helped though. I might do one beam and see if I'm hitting the stylised look a bit bit.

  • Mat Bevan(matbev) replied

hi @theluthier & blanchsb how is this looking for a more stylised look? i think this is a good balance between stylised and slightly subdued. what are your thoughts?

  • Shawn Blanch(blanchsb) replied

Oooooooohhhhhh yeah! That looks night and day there matbev!

  • Mat Bevan(matbev) replied

ah cheers blanchsb. yeah i think its really starting to look better now. getting the hang of it now.

ive had a pretty big project on this week so havent been able to dedicate as much time as i had hoped to the painting this week. im going to chuck up a progress shot later today though so you guys can see something but i should have alot more time next week to dedicate to this.

  • Mat Bevan(matbev) replied

ok so @theluthier I haven't been able to do as much as I had hoped this week due to a massive work load at my job. But i have managed to find some time to do some more sculpting of the wood and some initial texture painting. if this is going down the right path I will be working next week on finishing all the sculpting and texture painting and making sure they are all on one UV island. so that's going to take a bit of planning.

But I have provided a quick grab of the stylised wood. and also put my up to date .blend & textures on the drive. But i will be able to update these as i go on and everything is unwrapped

  • Kent Trammell replied

You're definitely headed in the right direction matbev! You've got the stylized wood detail on lock. No feedback from me right now other than to keep up the good work! 👌

  • Mat Bevan(matbev) replied

    awesome cheers @theluthier. appreciate that

  • Mat Bevan(matbev) replied

updated file in WIP. i havent made/updated my master though. i thought it best to leave it for you to do @theluthier.

I still need to do some texture painting to the beams as this is just a base colour but its getting there slowly

  • Mat Bevan(matbev) replied

still got a few beams I need to put in but it's almost there

  • Mat Bevan(matbev) replied

im in a really good place with my beams now. All the beams are in. im just finishing up doing some painting on them. i have updated my master with the beams and the textures. but im going to be finishing off what im doing texture painting wise tomorrow.

i think they are looking ok, but im really not happy with them from a normal/Cavity stand point.

  • splat21 replied
