This is an ongoing thread documenting my progress through the 2021 Collab Project.

I was having issues using my hair particle method to populate the roof tiles (the seed no longer changes the tiles instanced), so I rebuilt it using geometry nodes, and I think it's working really well.

  • Ben Nicholes(legobenj) replied

Here's how I'm layering the roof construction. I'm modelling with animation in mind so all the planks and tiles can fly in and join together. I don't know if that's how it will be animated in the final showcase, but I'm planning on at least doing that when adding this to my own reel later. Modelling this way will also allow the camera to see the roof from the inside.

    Homework Submission - Week 1 - Roof

    @theluthier

Here's my progress on the roof. There's still some fine-tuning to be done (some tiles with intersecting geometry, leaves not sitting flush on the roof mesh, additional wood plank sculpting), but this is as far as I was able to get this week.

  • Shawn Blanch(blanchsb) replied

Great job so far. I am very impressed even with some leaves on there.

Phenomenal work this week llegobenj! You've far exceeding my expectations for week 1. From the quality of the modeling to the assembly animation, to the addition of the leaves - WOW. You've earned full points and then some 👏

I only have one note to offer: The tiles feel a bit too perfectly placed at the moment. I'd like to see a touch more randomization to their placement and orientation:

Red lines are the laser-precision straightness I feel currently, green line represents the more randomized placement I'd like to see.

I'm drooling just thinking about the sculpted accents on all these roof bits 🤩

EDIT: One thing I forgot: The underside layer of tiles! I totally forgot this was how this style of roof was constructed till I saw your assembly animation. Excellent job building it properly!

If polycount wasn't an issue I'd recommend all roofs add this underside layer of tiles. However since it's not present in the art and we have keep polycounts as low as possible, I have recommend we lose that under layer. It's hurts my heart to do so... 😖

llegobenj I added one more note: Just tagging you to make sure you see it.

    Bake Tests:

I feel like the wood bake was a mixed success. I'll need to play with that some more.

  • Kent Trammell replied

    llegobenj 🤩🤩🤩🤩

Wow, those roof tiles are absolute dynamite: Sculpt and bake. Phenomenal!

The wood sculpts look great but yeah, the bake have some funkiness going on. Really I'm thrown off by the splotches of....purple? Maybe the bake is fine but hard to see past the purple.

The long "spine" beams feel like a different kind of wood than the flat boards:

I like the fewer, longer crevices on the left. Feels a little more natural but still stylized. The long beams have a lot of small crevices and knots that feel more stylized than natural. If might work OK but I'd like to see the beams match the boards a little better.

  • Shawn Blanch(blanchsb) replied

Since baking wasn't expected until week 3 I would say you are doing awesome!
I'm no master baker either. Thanks for plowing ahead to see the issues prior to the stream.

     Homework Submission - Week 3 - Roof

    @theluthier

I think most of my work this week will be fine-tuning: Booling intersecting tiles, sculpting the remaining wood (mostly dormers), adding cavity maps, & manually positioning the leaves.

  • Ben Nicholes(legobenj) replied

I've only hand-painted the wood. For the tiles and leaves, I'm randomizing their color so that tiles with the same normals can still have different colors.

  • Kent Trammell replied

Man, oh man..this looks phenomenal. Another assembly anim in full shaded glory! You're selling your asset in such an impactful way. Amazing work llegobenj 👏

I really think a cavity map will be the cherry on top of an already-beautiful asset. Can you make sure your latest is synced to Google drive (please include textures!). I'm super eager to link this into the assembly file

  • Ben Nicholes(legobenj) replied

@theluthier The latest is synced (even though the name is still version 00) and the textures are uploaded; I can make sure it's linked when I get home from work this evening.

  • Kent Trammell replied

My fault - google drive stopped syncing on my end. Fixed that and I have your up-to-date files now!

  • Kent Trammell replied

llegobenj So I'm thinking 1024 isn't the right resolution for your roof. Can you rebake your maps at 2048? There's just too much good details getting pixelated!

  • Ben Nicholes(legobenj) replied

@theluthier I've uploaded 2048 versions and I think I've relinked them correctly to the WIP file.

  • Kent Trammell replied

Thanks for updating the texture sizes and adjusting the roof to match the latest blockout. Your roof looks soooo good. I'm going to have to figure out a clean way to  feature both yours and andybegg's in the final. It's friggin' cool to swap them out, both look unique, BOTH LOOK FANTASTIC.

Your'e done, sir! Thanks for contributing to this project. It's been a pleasure working with you 🤝

PS: Consider joining the interior effort in May. Your skills would be much appreciated :)
