Homework Submission - Week 1 - Canvas Canopy

    @theluthier

Here's my blockout for week 1. I tried a few different methods for the shape and tears on the edges but eventually settled on a lattice and the knife tool. I'm still not sure if the knife tool was the right call.

nice work, love how its bending and how you attatched that patch on it

    Thanks!

Excellent work iinfamy! I appreciate that you went further than the expectation (blockout) and you're introducing details warped by a lattice. For the effort you get full points this week, easy 👏

However! The canvas is begging to be sculpted. All you will need is a simple plane in the general shape of the art and then it's sculpting time! If you're in the stream tomorrow, remind me and I'll do a little demo. But here's a video about sculpting fabric (old Blender version but relevant concepts).

  • Randal Gray(infamy) replied

Thank you! @theluthier I will definitely be in the stream tomorrow, sculpting is something I really struggle with, but I'm really eager to improve. I will also start reviewing the video on sculpting fabric as well.

Homework Submission - Week 2 - Canvas Canopy

@theluthier  Here is my canvas canopy for week 2. I'm not finished yet but something seems off, and I am not sure what it is. However, I should be finished with both the cloth and the legs by tomorrow and if not before the Tuesday stream. I struggle with sculpting a lot because it's so free form if that's the right expression. But I am trying, and I feel like I'm proving. It was a week of learning and experimenting.

Major respect for trying something outside your comfort zone iinfamy! You did really well. But I have some fresh advice that I think you will like: Let's forget sculpting!

I was trying to figure out how to phrase my feedback and couldn't. The fact is this would be much simpler to use cloth simulation to get right: Let Blender do the work for us!

I will demonstrate this today during the casual stream. Look for it live or in the recording 👍

  • Randal Gray(infamy) replied

@theluthier Sounds great to me! I'm actually a lot more comfortable with the cloth sim than sculpting!

Homework Submission - Week 3 - Canvas Canopy

@theluthier I'm just checking in to let you know I'm still here and working on the canopy, but I'm definitely behind and in need of the buffer week. (Just a couple of days actually.) Got very sidetracked with the patch and cloth simulation to get something that isn't pulled as tightly. However, my priorities are back in order and my actual homework will be up later this week!

  • Kent Trammell replied

No worries iinfamy! Thanks for the heads up. You've GOT THIS 💪

iinfamy Tremendous work on the canvas canopy! I just added it to the assembly and it looks 🤩

I was shocked how good the fringed edges looked with such a lo-res texture. A more optimal way to do the fringe would be it's own set of UVs and a tileable segment of fringe. The same way I demonstrated the wainscoting.

You don't need to make that adjustment but just offering some food for thought. You're done! Great work this month and thanks for contributing to the project 🤝

iinfamy This scene looks like it came straight from a renaissance festival. Looks so good!

  • Randal Gray(infamy) replied

@theluthier Woohoo! Thank you! I learned a lot and I really look forward to the next one. It was really cool and such a pleasure to do something like this. I will also go back and try a version similar to the wainscoting to give it a shot and improve my skills.

    ullreym Thanks a ton!

iinfamy, your canvas canopy looks great!  I'd love to post your artwork in the TSMF Blog.  Please let me know if you create a money shot.

  • Randal Gray(infamy) replied

Thank you and Awesome! I will start working on a money shot, genuinely not too sure how to go about it for a piece like this, however.
